Peddle power for Cornish toddler Joe Way...

Peddle power for Cornish ToddlerAndrew Miners, of Helston, Lee Bradley from Wadebridge and Bodmin's Mike Fitzpatrick, are to cycle from Land's End to John o' Groats and back again over 10 days which will total around 1800 miles in June to raise money to help build Cornwall's first hospice for children, through the Precious Lives Appeal.

Their aim is to make at least £20,000 through sponsorship and donations.

The ride was Andrew's idea; he works for Cornwall Council, based at Scorrier, and said the inspiration came from travelling around Cornwall.

"I saw all the stories about the hospice," he said "My wife Lorraine and I have two children (of 5 and 3) and I saw what people were doing and it brings a lump to my throat. I threw down the gauntlet, and I said ' let's do it'."

Mike, who works for Travis Perkins Builders in Wadebridge, became involved when his partner, Carrie Stone, who works for A Plant in Bodmin, heard about Andrew's bid. "I was 'volunteered' by my partner," he quipped. "I thought it was a good idea."

The three lads are joining the ranks of the rare groups of people who not only cycle from one end of the UK to the other but back again.

Andrew also came across the story of Joe Way who died in May 2008 after battling against a rear reaction to medication called Steven Johnson Syndrome.

Matt Way Joe’s Dad said “It was great to get the call from Andrew we are so amazed by how people have been touched by Joe’s and other family’s stories. Although it’s too late for Joe we know how vital the hospice is not just for Cornish families but for families to also come from out of the county to experience Cornwall, the generosity of Cornish people and enjoy happy times before the inevitable happens”.

Joe’s web and media team will be getting the message out about the huge effort the lads are making.

“I was moved by Joe’s story as were the rest of the lads doing the ride, the struggle that he endured touched a nerve in all of us and made us realise that by completing this event would, in some small way help all those children and parents in Cornwall who face the anguish of having a seriously ill child. Its good to see something as positive coming from their tragic loss, and to this end Joe wont be far from peoples thoughts “
